Jeff Chiba Stearns | Mixed Match

Jeff Chiba Stearns | Mixed Match

Alumnus Jeff Chiba Stearns (‘01) demonstrates how Emily Carr graduates follow their creative passions. His latest film, Mixed Match, is a compelling and evocative documentary that has the potential to save lives. It focuses on addressing multi-racial patients’ tremendous struggle to find suitable bone marrow and cord blood donors, while exploring the role race plays in medicine. With the multi-racial community becoming one of the fastest growing demographics in North America, being mixed race is no longer just about an identity, it can be a matter of life and death.

When asked about his time spent at Emily Carr University, Jeff says “Emily Carr provided me with a very solid and well-rounded arts education and taught me the many aspects of making an animated film that I would later use to launch my career as a professional animation and documentary filmmaker.”

Soon after graduation, Jeff founded his own animation production company, Meditating Bunny Studio Inc. and he cites the skills that he developed at Emily Carr vital to the work he produces to this day.

It has been 15 years since Jeff graduated and he still feels very connected with his alma mater. Over the years, he has come back to give talks and share his knowledge with students, and in 2010, he was awarded the Emily Award for Outstanding Alumni Achievement.

Last but not least, we asked Jeff about the significance for students to receive financial support during their studies.

“Supporting students in the creative industries is key to building a country rich with culture and vibrancy,” says Jeff. “It helps give students a push to excel in their fields by allowing them to spend more time, and take more risks with their work, and to develop a personal style that will aid them in their lifelong career goals.”
