The Canada Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibit showcasing award-winning designers from the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Design in Canada – Outstanding Achievement from British Columbia, brings together objects from the 1970s to recent times that collectively celebrate the spirit and soul of Canada’s westernmost province

Fifty applied artists, designers and craftspeople reflect the province’s creativity through the innovative use of wood, glass, ceramic, metal, textiles, plastics and other materials to build beautiful forms that serve a purpose. Some of the objects in this exhibit are modest, others are grand – all are functional. Together, they represent British Columbia’s unique contribution to the cultural and economic fabric of Canada.

This show at the Canada Gallery in Canada House on Trafalgar Square is the result of the BC Creative Achievement Awards. Established in 2005, an average of five awards are given annually by juries drawn from across this vast and diverse province.

This exhibit aims to convey British Columbia’s sense of place within the wider Canadian design context. Located in the Pacific Northwest, BC’s stately mountains, ocean and expansive forests influence and inspire its artists and designers who draw equally upon the province’s rich multi-cultural story.

Curated by Professor Emeritus Sam Carter from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, the selection of items from each of the 50 award-winning designers since the award’s inception opens the door on a world of multi-disciplinary examples of that rich encounter between design, culture and place.

The Canada Gallery’s ongoing program is generously supported by our Principal Sponsor – Dahdaleh Foundation, chaired by Victor Phillip Dahdaleh.
